One conflict in The Hobbit is when Gandalf came to Bilbo's door and asked him to come along on the adventure. Bilbo wasn't sure if he should come along. Bilbo just wanted to home and relax. He also wanted to eat. Bilbo was thinking that he wants nothing to do with Gandalf and his adventures. Bilbo invited Gandalf to come over to have some tea. Gandalf did not though. Later, one dwarf after another, when all thirtheen dwarves and Gandalft were over, then Gandalf decided that Bilbo would be the burglar for the adventure. They showed Bilbo the map and explaned why there ? were going to the mountains. Bilbo was still not very comforable that he wanted to go on this adventure. ~ Did you re read this? What kind of conflict did you choose? How was the conflict resolved if Bilbo was still not happy? Mrs. Best

I think that this part of the story is just the beginning and that Mrs. Best wants us to pick a different part. Otherwise, great job, you really supported your answer well, but I think that you could use page numbers too.

Hobbit Question 2

In your own words, describe what happens next to Bilbo and the dwarves in the forest.

The group hears the howling of wolves. They hurry up the tree right before they get cought. They Who is they? are called worgs. Wargs are allies of the goblins. Then the worgs quickly tell the golins that the group is in the trees. Gandalf was ready to attack the gobblins when the Lord of the Eagles has seen what had happened in the situation. The Eagle, along with others, fly down and grab the travelers?I love this! "travelers from the trees" EXCELLENT! from the tree. They fly them to saftey. The Eagles did this because there don't like the goblins and they are friends wiith Gandalf. They provide food and rest for the group. They then go back to their adventure. ?Taylor, this is not proofed at all. Lots of typos. Please read some other responses to see what I am looking for. Try Thomas D's or Coco's. ~ Mrs. Best

Hobbit Question 3
March 20, 2011

When Gandolf first visits Bilbo, looking for someone to share in an adventure, Bilbo tells Gandalf that hobbits are

"...plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can't think what anybody sees in them "(7).

The dwarves are not quite sure that Bilbo will be able to handle the adventures at all, and Bilbo himself wonders how he found himself at The Green Dragon Inn, riding a pony away from Hobbiton. But now, Bilbo has become the unspoken leader of the party. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would never have made it to Lonely Mountain.

Is an adventure something that happens to us or how we react to what happens? Often in life, adventures are not as obvious as killing giant spiders or escaping from an Elven king's dungeon. Sometimes adventures are made out of ordinary days and ordinary events, with ordinary people who become the heroes. You may not even realize you've been in an adventure until after it's over!

Think about the times you have learned a new skill, moved, changed schools, competed in sports, welcomed a new pet, discovered a new friend, performed in front of an audience, or had a terrifying fall. These events are adventures in process. Have you grown or changed from your experience with any of these situations, as Bilbo grew and changed
because of his adventure with the dwarves? Recall a time when something happened to cause you to grow and change in a positive way. Respond on your wiki page.

I think that adventures just happen in life. After we have had an adventure, we might have not noticed it until it's over. I think that how we react, an adventure happens. Some examples that happened to me is when i joined track for school, we would practice at school and travel to all different schools for a meet. That was an adventure that I did not notice until track was over. Another example of an adventure that happens to how I react is when I went snowboarding, there are lots of people on the slopes and blocking all different hills. I had gone down several different hills that i hadn't gone down before. This adventure was caused by the people blocking the hill and me reacting to avoid running into them. There are many different examples of adventures that happens to how we react. Like Bilbo, he went on his adventure because he acted like he didn't want to go on this adventure. Bilbo was insisting not to go, but instead later he found himself going on the adventure without rememeber how he got ouside of his hobbit hole. Then he had to go along with it.
I have grew and changed by a new pet I got. In my experiance, I got a goldfish from a fish store. I welcomed him into my home and i took great care of him. I have change because of my fish. I changed by being a lot more responsible. I have to be responsible because I have to feed him once in the morning, and again at night. I also have to change his water once a week. I also had to be very careful not to fill the water to high, or he would jump out of his bowl. If I wasn't not responsible and I was forgetful, there would have been some bad consequnences with my fish. He could have died. Talking care of a pet is a lot of work, but it is fun. Now I learned to take care of a fish, the sucessful way, just like Bilbo learned a new skill of being more courageous. Once he was on the adventure and at the beginning and at Smaug's lair, he did not back down from it even though he wished he was at home. ~ You made good connections. Taking care of a pet can certainly be an adventure that changes people. Did you stop to reread your answer aloud (softly) to yourself? I think you would hear your grammar errors if you took a minute to do that. ~ Mrs. Best

Hobbit Question 4 March 29, 2011

If Thorin could have lived, do you think he would have regretted his greed? What do you think Tolkien is trying to teach us about material wealth by Thorin's death? In your response, site textual evidence to support your response. Use page numbers too.

I think that Thorin would have regretted his greed. Earlier, Thorin thought that the dwarves found all the treasure. He will not give his treasure to anyone because it is his. Now that he is dying, he is forgiving Bilbo. He is also noticing that he will not have the treasure when he dies. Therefore, I think he is regretting his greed.
I think that Tolkien is trying to teach us that money is not everything. Money and treasure cannot buy happiness, friends, and a lot of things in life. He is telling us that we have to live our life greatly, but money cannot be at the top of the list. We will be like Thorin if we have greed. That's not a good thing to do. The thing when Thorin said when he was going to leave the world, was this: " If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world" (290). I really think that this shows evidence that Thorin would regret his greed. He saying that he made a mistake in life and wishes that he could have not favored gold more. ~ Very true that he regretted it! ~ Mrs. Best
